New England Expats Behind Smac’s Shack
are sitting at a table by the ocean, the sun warming our faces, breathing in the salty air with the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, patiently waiting for the food shack employee to announce: “Numbah thidee foah, yaw lobstah rolls ah ready, thidee foah! The warm, buttery, toasted, split top roll overflowing with chunks of 100% Maine lobster meat. That first bite – WOW! And now we are thrilled to recreate this experience for the lobstah lovahs here in Hobe Sound, Florida.
Susan: I grew up in South Windsor, Connecticut. As a teenager I frequented Sound View Beach located in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, Rhode Island in the summertime. It was Rhode Island where I got my first taste of fresh seafood at Aunt Carrie's in Point Judith. I've been a seafood lover ever since!
Scott: I grew up in Acton, Massachusetts. As a child, I spent my summers with family in beautiful Harpswell, Maine. I would spend time on the shore clamming and watching the lobster boats go by. The highlight was sitting with my family sharing a meal at the local seafood shack.
The last 30 years, we lived in the Massachusetts towns of North Chelmsford, Worcester, and North Oxford and in Wilton, New Hampshire. Our favorite New England beach is gorgeous East Beach in Charlestown, RI. We used to stop at Sandy’s Fine Food Emporium and buy a pound of lobster meat and a French baguette before we would head to East Beach to devour at dinner time while watching the sunset.
We both had life-long careers in the New England building industry but we needed a change. We are true foodies, which led us to starting our lobster roll business.
Dark, and rainy. Freezing cold. Snow, lots of snow. Shoveling. Plowing.
Living in North Oxford, Massachusetts, clearing snow from our steep, very long driveway every winter, just got to be too much. We love the outdoors, especially being at the ocean. For the past 30 years, we’ve been visiting Susan’s mom in beautiful Hobe Sound. We knew we would eventually relocate to Florida.
About five years before we moved down, we started perfecting our Smac’s Shack’s Maine lobster roll. We tested and tasted lobster rolls along the coast of Maine, throughout New England and Florida. We are delighted to say; it’s perfect. And, we couldn’t be more excited to share the love of lobstah with ya!
